Like Rockwell, Janney is tasked with inhabiting a grotesquerie, and she does so. The added benefit of a post-film showcase demonstrating her likeness to an actual person seals the deal.
Laurie Metcalf, in a widely praised, overwritten performance that didn’t work for me at all, has the best shot to bring home something for Lady Bird, but I think it’s Janney’s to lose.
