Last Man In Aleppo (Feras Fayyad, Kareem Abeed and Søren Steen Jespersen)
This seems a total toss-up. Each nominee has aspects likely to explain its 2018 Oscar after the fact — I personally want to see a nearly 90-year-old Agnès Varda take the stage, because Agnès Varda is the best — but the brutal topicality of the atrocities in Syria might dominate voters’ minds.
On top of that, Abeed was initially denied a travel visa to attend the ceremony, calling to mind Asghar Farhadi‘s shameful situation last year. Farhadi’s The Salesman won then, and I think Last Man in Aleppo wins now.
